The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation (UMHEF) invites applications and nominations for the position of President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). About UMHEF
Founded in 1965, UMHEF is an independent nonprofit foundation dedicated to supporting students who attend United Methodist-related colleges, universities, and theological schools. Each year, UMHEF awards more than $2 million in scholarships, helping students pursue higher education with reduced financial burden. The Foundation partners with over 100 institutions across the country and is funded solely by generous donors and its endowment. With a $3.5 million annual operating budget, UMHEF plays a vital role in expanding educational access and fostering the next generation of servant leaders in the United Methodist tradition.

The Opportunity
UMHEF seeks a President and CEO who will combine strong organizational leadership with a heart for faith-based education. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the President and CEO will provide strategic direction, oversee fundraising and donor engagement, and ensure fiscal responsibility. This leader will steward UMHEF’s mission while navigating the evolving landscape of higher education and denominational change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain relationships with United Methodist bishops, higher education leaders, foundations, donors, and partner organizations. (15% of time)

  • Recruit, lead, and inspire a high-performing staff team, fostering accountability, collaboration, and a culture of trust. (15% of time)

  • Plan, organize, and implement comprehensive national fundraising and development programs, with a focus on major gifts, planned giving, and donor cultivation. (25% of time)

  • Provide visionary leadership to the Foundation, ensuring alignment with its mission and strategic goals.  (10% of time)

  • Oversee financial operations, including asset management, endowment performance, and budget administration. (10% of time)

  • Ensure scholarship funds are distributed in accordance with donor intent, Foundation policies, and Board priorities. (10% of time)

  • Serve as the primary representative and spokesperson for UMHEF, articulating the vision and impact of the Foundation to diverse audiences. (15% of time)

  • Fundraising Expert: Proven track record in cultivating donor relationships and securing significant gifts to support mission growth.

  • Grounded in Faith: A person of deep faith with an understanding of Methodist polity, theology, and higher education.

  • Committed to Diversity and Inclusion: Embraces a wide range of perspectives and fosters an environment of equity and belonging.

Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree/doctorate preferred.

  • Minimum of 5–7 years of fundraising and development experience, with demonstrated success in securing major gifts.

  • At least 5 years of senior leadership and staff management experience.

  • Successful engagement with United Methodist leaders, churches, and institutions.

  • Strong oral, written, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex issues with clarity and conviction.

  • Willingness to relocate to the Nashville, Tennessee area.

Compensation and Location
UMHEF offers a competitive compensation package with a salary range of $175,000- $200,000 commensurate with experience. The position is based in Nashville, Tennessee, with schedule flexibility, though significant in-person presence is expected.
